FINE CUT TOBACCO
"RAINING NOTES"
We are really glad to talk about today of a new release titled “Raining Notes”, the debut solo album of the french prog jazz trio “Fine Cut Tobacco” founded in 2015 and led by the bass player Anthony Létévé. Less than seven years have passed since we appreciated the skill and outstandingly creative bass lines of this artist on “Ready to go” (2010) the last work recorded with prog rock band Black Noodle Project before Anthony decided to leave the group in the same year. And now with this new line-up consisting of the elegant sound of the pianist Emmanuel Rocha Perazzo, the brilliant drummer Thomas Delor and, obviously, the multifaceted bass player Anthony Létévé, the change of the musical scene is radical. Yes, because we are faced with a new prog jazz trio, a definition that includes a whole universe of sound ranges and different styles, so that they seem to be fully qualified to gain an international resonance, and they do that directly from Paris, one of the european capital of modern jazz and avant-garde. And this trio proves to live up the expectations by realizing an album of undoubted high profile in which a natural inclination to an eclectic style and the perfect interplay of the instruments enter the original signature to their kind of music. |
The track titled Water Lily, officially launched by the parisian trio, opens the project. There’s an intro of about one minute and twenty seconds skilfully covered by an intense and lyrical piano solo - an introduction marked by a sort of classical approach - which doesn’t let presume the sudden change of scene that will take place soon after during the same tune, a change stressed by a rhythm that has become more lilting, characterised by an evident world fusion pattern as well as by an imaginative melodic line of high stylistic value supported by the distinctive as well as creative and robust bass-lines of Létévé in addiction to the prodigious touch marked by the crash of Delor's drum, so full of accents. But making everything even more surprising are the choral insertions, consisting of words and syllables maybe invented that give an additional rhythm (if proof were needed) an aspect that confirms an hidden soul of the trio tinged with the world fusion.
With the track A Hand, the second scene of the album, we can experience a change of background; this is a tune characterised by a slow start and some romantic aspects but it immediately reveals the strongly jazz spirit of interlocked voicings, of the improvisations with elegant arpeggios on Létévé’s bass - so dense - as if it wants to remind us the accurate and unique touch granted by the interrelation between the instruments perfectly coordinated like the fingers of an hand. In Oceans we are definitely led to a sort of alternate dimension where the deepness of the abyss seems to arise with some power peakes of pure musical expression through the vibrant notes and a more than ever low register of Létévé’s electric bass, stressed by the change of the rhythmic patterns and accents of the drum, the extraordinary arpeggios of the piano, that is to say a self-perpetuating wave of sound through the rapid change of the registers. |

And so we get to the fourth and fifth tracks of the project, Escapade à Saint Fargeau is surelly the piece more jazz funk tinged performed by the trio, led from the intro by the ultra rhythmic bass of Létévé who engages in deep funk and glissando, an additional stylistic digression of high value, and then it continues with an intimate and lyrical Black Bees marked by the ethereal voice of Anthony, perfectly in line with the lyrical and dreamy intention of the tune which couldn’t help but contain a melodic and intense vibrato on bass, so as to give substance and depth to the subtle black bees flight which give the title to this track, a real ballad as well as a delightful poetic digression. |
Real But Useless

In Real But Useless, the sixth tune of the project, the bass harmonics and the drum steal the scene from the very beginning, and they create separated but intense scope for initiative and inspiration of the piano whose incisive phrasing can prepare the listener for the fine and sinuous mood of the trumpet, drafting a context tinged unexpectedly with noir.
With Apparitions, we can experience the final change of background, which proves that the album is deeply founded on the roles of the landscapes. We find again the agile and tight phrasing of Emmanuel on piano, while the intensive conversation between drum and bass creates the perfect amalgam of sounds, with the bass harmonics played with elegance and gentleness by Létévé which dilate and at the same time they gather the deepness of the sound, leading to an exchange made of precisely apparitions as well as of continuous references and echoes between each instrument. The perfect conclusion of a very ambitious project which bodes well. |
