INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN MARON
I was looking forward to meeting Jonathan Maron for several years. And more specifically, I wanted to do that since I discovered Groove Collective with their first album, released in 1994. I was pretty impressed by Jonathan’s bass playing in that record. I started to follow him with a great attention and today, twenty-two years later, I just can say I did the right thing. That artist who seemed to me at that time a great acid jazz, funk and jazz bassist also proved to be what he promised, that is to say a complete musician with the most unique eclecticism. Groove Collective recorded six studio albums and several precious lives, all focused on the most original combination of rhythms and different influences, always with a jazz mood on the background; these are works that I should very much like to suggest, in full. Everyone should listen to or revived them because they have paved the way for a great part of the most sophisticated music performed today in similar contexts but not the same ones.
Jonathan has lent his always really sensual and expressive bass to many other solid and important artists. The list is very long as well as really suggestive: Angela Johnson, the amazing Repercussions (whose records are a “must have”), Josh Roseman Unit (in two fantastic albums), Rob Scott, Trio Feral, his collegues in Groove Collective Genji Siraisi, Jay Rodriguez, Itaal Shuur and Barney McAll, to continue with Osunlade, Maxwell, Jacques Schwarz Bart, Robbie Dupree, Dave Douglas and many more. This is a surprising as well as ever fluid music career that he has always managed to lead with a great intelligence and sensibility. It's always impressed me the way Jonathan could play a decisive role in all the genres and subgenres he faced to, dance or almost house recordings included. In the series of interviews, published on Bass My Fever, the common denominator that links together so different artists and musicians, is their open-minded thinking, the spirit of innovation and their ability to interact with different sounds and to embrace them. In view of this, we couldn’t forget an interesting musician like Jonathan Maron. In my long experience as records seller, I can say I sold without any effort some tons of albums where Jonathan’s bass playing was able to meld the sound. Moreover, a memory of my own is related to a rainy afternoon in the store where I worked, while the album “We the people” was playing loud. Everybody stopped and all the copies sold out in a few minutes and people, who knew me, kept asking me one after the other: “But who’s on bass? It’s prodigious…”. And with a smile I was glad to spell: Jonathan Maron. I leave you to our interview, and I recommend you keep an eye out, because Maron’s first solo album is going to be released very soon. And it’s clear that there won’t be anything obvious or predictable because Jonathan Maron is able to master different languages under the magnificient aegis of his own electric bass. I invite you to seek out all the records where he played and to visit his website (www.jonathanmaron.com) so as to get precious information and appreciate his nature of authentic musician who is always ready to master the new challenges. |
