INTERVIEW WITH KENNY PEARSON
When I found myself, overnight, facing with Extinction Level Event’s music I pratically fell out my chair. All that I was listening to, seemed to be unbelieveble: a metal band with three ultra-heavy basses, a powerful voice and a rentless drummer. The idea of stratifying metal’s bass sound, at its best really, makes Extintion Level Event absolutely winning with as well as of high interest; that’s why they are defined as “clank” and “clankcore”, but naturally their project offers a range of nuance which runs them from technical metal to djent even to prog. That’s a promise that they will be able to keep surelly.
Their first Ep, “Catalyst” includes six tracks that show a great deal of energy, where bass precisesly decides. There are clear echoes of the best Meshuggah, in terms of sound structure, as well as references to bands like TesseracT and Periphery, but ELE retain their own identity. This group of Winston Salem can build up a wall of sound which holds together intricate shapes and different structures, rhythmic movements between basses and even various substrates of intriguing tune. Personally I think that Extinction Level Event are one of the most successful demonstrations of the continuous development of metal towards kinds of music previously unthinkable. This aspect also proves that our adored metal universe itself is a type of music more subjected to welcome contaminations and courageous crossings. About that and about much more I’ve told with one of clank’s creator that is to say ELE’s bass player, Kennon Pearson, who granted to me this very interesting interview. |

www.soundcloud.com/extinctionleveleventnc www.facebook.com/extinctionleveleventband ............................. LDP: Extinction Level Event is a very original band as regards current metal music background but not exclusively. They are three bassists, one vocalist and a drummer. Except for occasional projects like Markus Grosskopf’s Bassinvaders - which was substantially different - you are the only ones who can emphasise bass in such a powerful way. How did you come up with the idea of all-bass band? KP: Originally, Duncan and Ryan were writing riffs on a 7 string guitar, but it just didn’t sound heavy enough, so they went with the idea of 2 basses and that’s how the sound was created. After they had jammed for a bit, I joined the band and that completed our sound. Currently, Duncan and I are now the only bass players, but depending on how we write we may go back to 3 bassists. LDP: Kennon, I suppose that each one of you is used to listen to different kinds of music. I guess, with heterogeneous preferences, too. What can you tell me about your taste in music and what about your favourite artists? KP: It can range, but I’d say 98% of what I listen to is some form of metal. I’ve got a lot of favourite bands, but my most listened-to currently are TesseracT, Ghost, Within The Ruins, After The Burial, Children Of Bodom, Thy Art Is Murder, and Mastodon. Aside from all of the metal I love, I do like some classic rock like Pink Floyd, some punk like Die Toten Hosen, and even a little hip-hop/rap like Mac Miller and Childish Gambino. LDP: Extinction Level Event are still undefined. You have been mentioned as a “clank” band and not “djent”, you have been often referred to as “Meshuggah” of bass. If we wanted to attempt to go into the datails of tags. To what kind of genre do you feel close to? KP: That’s tough to say because we do fit so closely to “djent”, we just figured we would coin our own term for our sound. With us you can hear elements of djent, prog, and other types of metal meshed together. LDP: In the last few years, Metal has been further stocked by new nuance, bringing out into the open a lot of groups which were inconceivable, until very recently, like Periphery, TesseracT, Animals As Leaders to name but the few. What do you think about these new bands with a such original spirit though they are part of the same kind of music? KP: I love them, Periphery and TesseracT are two of my favourite bands actually, and have played a bit of influence on my playing in ELE. I think what makes each of those bands unique is that they bring their own flavour to this new wave of metal currently going on, and they’ve paved the way for many newer bands, like us, to really expand what it means to be a metal band. LDP: When I was a boy, bass found its own disciples in more classic players like Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan e Randy Coven. Now and over many years there’s a school of amazing performers as well as much more extreme bass players. Who are, in your opinion, metal bassists of the present and the future? KP: Personally, I’d say Amos Williams - TesseracT, Nolly (Periphery, Evan Brewer-(ex-The Faceless, Dan Briggs - BTBAM, to name a few. There are lots of awesome metal bass players out there, but these are definitely some of the ones that stick out to me as being some of the best present bassists. LDP: Your first EP “The Catalyst” received very positive reviews and I liked it so much: there’s a so crazy groove! You already have a very strong sound cohesion, what are your plans for the future? What about a complete album, for example? KP: We are currently in the process of writing our first full length, which we’re going to take a little bit of time on to make sure it’s awesome. Once we’ve released it, sometime next year, we’ll tour to support it. And we’ll also be playing lots of local and regional shows, as well has a few other tours as well to continue to grow our fanbase. LDP: What’s your opinion about the state of the record production markets? What do you think about the fear that everything’s falling apart? Could it possibly be that? KP: I think the fear is just that: fear. I don’t really read much into it because every industry in existence goes through many phases and periods of evolution, and the music industry is having a huge one right now. The internet is a wonderful tool to expand your reach—you just need to work hard at utilizing it to the fullest. There’s a huge saturation of bands and artists, and the key is to find a way to make yourself stick out in the best way possible. LDP: Would you like to talk about your current gear as well as the one you use in live performances? KP: The foundation of my sound is my Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra. I purchased it back before I was in ELE, when I was playing in a hard rock band, InterTwyneD. It’s where all of my tone comes from, and since we currently just go direct-out when playing live, my sound stays consistent, which is an amazing feeling. Eventually we’ll probably use some cabs for stage presence, but for now going direct or going into small cabs has been really awesome for us. As for basses, I’m currently using ESP LTD basses, which I really. My main one live is a B-205SM, which has a really honky tone, whereas my Surveyor 415 is a lot chunkier and tighter, and I prefer its tone for recording purposes. LDP: I asked you about your favourite artists but I’d like to know some records that you love, without any rank and with no restriction on number and genres. KP: Black Sabbath “Vol. 4”, Mastodon “Crack The Skye”, After The Burial “Wolves Within”, Pink Floyd “Wish You Were Here”, Arch Enemy “Doomsday Machine”, Children Of Bodom “Follow The Reaper”, Frank Zappa “The Man From Utopia”, and Black Label Society “The Blessed Hellride”. LDP: Finally, who would you like to work together with, sooner or later? Do you feel compatible with any band, in particular? KP: If you mean bands to tour with, I would absolutely love to tour with Meshuggah, Scar Symmetry, Nile, Behemoth, Periphery, TesseracT, Within The Ruins, Killswitch Engage.…there are just so many awesome bands I hope we get to tour/perform with! LDP: Thank you so much, Kennon! KP: Thank you! EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT are: Gavin Grace - vocals Ryan Reedy -– bass Duncan Pardue -–bass Kennon Pearson - bass Joey Colvin - drums Luca De Pasquale 2015

www.soundcloud.com/extinctionleveleventnc www.facebook.com/extinctionleveleventband ............................. Volendo forzatamente addentrarci nelle etichette... come vi sentite? KP: Personalmente direi Amos Williams (TesseracT), Nolly (Periphery), Evan Brewer (ex-The Faceless), Dan Briggs (BTBAM), per citarne alcuni. LDP: In ultimo, con chi vi piacerebbe collaborare, prima o poi? Vi sentite affini a qualche band in particolare? LDP: Grazie mille Kennon! KP: Grazie a te! EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT are: Gavin Grace - vocals Ryan Reedy - bass Duncan Pardue - bass Kennon Pearson - bass Joey Colvin - drums Luca De Pasquale 2015
