AND MUCH MORE...

Sam Cockrell is one of those successful examples of how a multifaceted voice can express itself by the blues, funk and soulful accents of a great bass playing. And this is what we can find on his own third release “Trying to Make a Living Playing My Guitar”, an album that includes and steps over the subtle lines sorrounding the contemporary blues by featuring eleven original songs all written by Cockrell, who can express once again all of his own skills also as a composer. From the beginning his music origin are stressed with the track “I’m from Chicago” the windy city where he grown up as a man as well as an artist, and the same social background is outlined in “This Ain’t Another Baby I Love You Song” where the deep and robust voice of Cockrell tells us about discrimination and other current issues like “right-wing radicals spewing hate in the nation” and the discontent of the working class who “have had enough…things needs to change”. Few but really suggestive words supported by the solid lines of the guitars and the essential sound of horns section while Sam’s twists on bass cut the song and make the track far more rhythmic and stronger. |
Since the second track “You Can Have It All If You Play The Game” we can also feel such deep soul influences while the bass impacts and pushes solo guitars and the keyboards become a reminder of the refrain repeated as a sort of expiation “You might go far, if you worship the davil that make you a star”. The approach becomes more unequivocal in “You’re a sell-out” whose funky lines on bass act as a megaphone for the tough meaning of the lyric which is focused on the ambition and the hard compromise between integrity and the claim to fame that all musicians have to face sooner or later. The need of forgiveness is instead emphasized by the ballad “Last Night” with the funky as well as jaunty groove of the bass which gives a line of fullness to the sound thanks to its agile and close developments. |
It’s evident that the beauty of the album lies in the variety of music shades included therein like in “She’s hot” an explosion of funk-pop-rock-dance inspirations all marked and powered by a robust and vibrant bass line not to mention the successful combination of sounds as in the brilliant duet song “Playing with my friends” together with the guitar and voice of Roger Girke, while in “I’ve Got To Make Some Changes” we can enjoy Cockrell’s great vocal skill that some people have matched with the warm voice of Robert Cray, the soul and rhythm and blues is easily expressed by his own extention that he never forces as well as by his own naturally nuanced timbres. |
It was 1999 when he released his debut solo album “I’m in the business”: through that work Cockrell opened up his own personal style based on the successfull combination between lyrics characterised by a strong sense of reality stressed by his intense groove and a strong vocal expressivity that he often shows in duet song as on "Having a Good Time" shared with Carl Weathersby and "Give It Up" with Billy Branch, in such funky explosions as on All night long and blues nuanced again by soulful accents as on “Girl You Know You Really Hurt Me” with the soft glissato on bass, and the melodic phrasing of sax not to mention the elegant guitar insertions, all details that reveal the distinctive signature of the band comprised at the time of Chris Forte on guitar, Rob Davis on drums and Howard Shaw on saxophone. |
Cockrell’s instinctive inclination towards music diversity that pushes the boundaries of blues (which is probably the great heritage gained by his long career as a sideman who shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King, James Brown, Chaka Khan, Rick James and A.C. Reed) is even more marked on his second solo album “Colorblind” released in 2001. As the title suggests, this is a tribute to the open mined vision of a world where children could grow up free of bias. This is a project that keeps its own promises, and it’s not by chance that it was partly recorded in Memphis, with the help of the legendary Memphis Horns. |
King, James Brown, Chaka Khan, Rick James and A.C. COLORBLIND LINE-UP Sam Cockrell - vocals and bass Chris Forte - guitar Rob Davis - drums John Kattke - keyboards The Memphis Horns (Wayne Jackson trumpet, trombone and Andrew Love tenor saxophone) perform on tracks 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 Special guests: Ronnie Baker Brooks, Joanna Connor, Chico Banks, Rick Perkins |
