James Rosocha, also known for his twenty-year precious collaboration along with B.D.Lenz in addition to his tours together with some refined musicians like Randy Brecker, the late Hiram Bullock and the “Spyrogyrian” Jay Beckenstein as well as Jeremy Wall, amongst others, makes his debut with the album called “Avalon”. |

The record opens with a song “Dysfunction Junction” characterised by a powerful groove which is part of the best jazz fusion tradition, by alternating skillfully between fingerstyle and slap. His solos as a leader are fluid and constant. “Ariana” the second track with strong latin influences finds his climax in an amazing solo which further confirms the skill as well as the peculiar taste of James Rosocha. |
Il lavoro si apre con un brano dal groove coinvolgente, “Dysfunction Junction”, che si innesta nella miglior tradizione jazz fusion, alternando fingerstyle e slap con molta efficacia. Il solismo del leader è fluido, costante. “Ariana”, la seconda traccia dalle forti tinte latine, trova il suo climax in un formidabile solo, che comprova ulteriormente l’abilità e il gusto di James Rosocha. |

In “Turbolence Ahead” is once more the groove to rule the roost, while “By The Wayside” shows more pronounced jazz inspirations; instead, “Lost” composed by Dave Haywood, develops a successful funky groove approaching the noblest pages of acid jazz. “Rumpus” bursts in vigorously, by gambling again on the happy alternation of fingerstyle technique (basically a continuous solo) and slap (which is used as a counterpoint and so as to colour as well as to fill some spaces. |
In “Turbulence Ahead” è sempre il groove a farla da padrone, mentre “By The Wayside” mostra influenze jazz più marcate; invece “Lost”, scritta da Dave Haywood, porta avanti un riuscito tiro funky, avvicinandosi alle pagine più nobili dell’acid jazz. “Rumpus” prorompe aggressiva, giocando sempre sulla felice alternanza tra la tecnica fingerstyle, in pratica un continuo assolo, e quella slap, usata per contrappuntare, colorire e riempire gli spazi. |

The eponymous track “Avalon” reminds a legendary composition like “Continuum” of Jaco Pastorius; the fluidity of each solo is crucial again and the support of Audric Jankauskas’s electric guitar is really interesting. “Reverie” returns to a more strictly fusion context, thanks to the great work of Thomas C. Alexander on keyboards and Josh Orlando - who is the author of an excellent solo - on drums. The album ends in our opinion with the most successful and fascinating track of this promising work that is to say “Harlem River Drive” on which James Rosocha proves once more again to be inclined to give his bass a rythmical and melodic role through a really captivating solo. |
La traccia che dà il titolo all’intero lavoro richiama una composizione leggendaria come “Continuum” di Jaco Pastorius; molto centrata anche in questo caso la fluidità solistica e molto interessante il contributo alla chitarra elettrica di Audric Jankauskas. Con “Reverie” si torna in un ambito più strettamente fusion, con l’ottimo lavoro di Thomas C. Alexander alle tastiere e Josh Orlando, artefice anche di un pregevole solo, alla batteria. L’album si chiude con quella che a nostro avviso è la traccia più riuscita e avvincente di questo promettente lavoro, “Harlem River Drive”, in cui James Rosocha si dimostra ancora una volta propenso a concedere al suo basso funzione rimica e melodica, con un assolo di basso davvero molto attraente. |

We can definitely consider this debut of James Rosocha as a first step towards the certain framing of a personal and seductive style. Rosocha instrumental skill is out of the question. His courage to choose a mostly fusion context is also to be applauded, even though we are sure that his expressivity on bass should be inspired by a jazz focused language tout court, with a step closer to funk, given that Rosocha musical texture is suitable for playing more than a code or genre.
We therefore advise this album, waiting for his second work that, we’re sure, will go further towards those border territories to which James Rosocha belongs and and that he’s still shaping.

In definitiva, possiamo salutare questo esordio di James Rosocha come un primo tassello verso la certa costruzione di uno stile personale e seduttivo. La capacità strumentale di Rosocha è fuori discussione, il coraggio di scegliere un contesto essenzialmente fusion è da apprezzare, anche se siamo convinti che l’espressività sullo strumento di James debba essere stimolata da un linguaggio più allargato al jazz tout court, con un passo in più verso il funk, considerato che lo spettro timbrico di Rosocha può prestarsi a più di un codice o genere.
Promuoviamo dunque quest’album senza alcun dubbio, curiosi della seconda opera che, ne siamo certi, si spingerà oltre, in quel territorio di rischio che James Rosocha merita e sta costruendo.
