Ton Scherpenzeel is a top-tier Dutch pianist, keyboardist, and composer, widely renowned in the rock and progressive rock scenes for his tenure in legendary bands such as Kayak, Camel, and Earth & Fire.
His new album, released this year by the fascinating Dutch label OOB (as were his previous works: Virgin Grounds, a reissue of the 1991 album under the name Orion, and Achter De Schermen, a beautiful and precious collection of theatrical music), is entirely instrumental and a lyrical, refined opus for solo piano. In "A Fleeting Light", Scherpenzeel’s lyricism runs wild in the magnificent and expansive title track (38 minutes!), while "Irene" and "Lost Blue Of Chartres" are two well-known pieces from the Kayak repertoire, a band whose praises we will never tire of singing and which deserves continuous, heartfelt rediscovery. The versions featured in this latest work are absolutely compelling and stand out as one of the many highlights of the album. Ton, who launched his solo career with the unforgettable Le Carnaval Des Animaux in 1978, possesses the stature of a composer and performer comfortable with perhaps the most complex art within artistic expression: seducing the listener without allowing them time to "contaminate" the experience. In this regard, A Fleeting Light disarms the listener immediately with its crystalline purity. In times like these, the release of an album built around piano arrangements designed to showcase the instrument’s timbre and versatility in all its facets is an artistic gesture befitting the greats; and in this case, it is an entirely natural choice that is well worth the price of admission, as they say. At "Bass, My Fever," we truly loved this record, further proving our attention to music beyond just the world of electric and double bass. We highly recommend its purchase. Ton Scherpenzeel è un pianista, tastierista e compositore olandese di altissimo livello, conosciuto in ambito rock e progressive rock per la sua militanza in gruppi storici come Kayak, Camel ed Earth&Fire.
Il suo nuovo album, uscito quest’anno per l’interessantissima label olandese OOB (come del resto i precedenti Virgin Grounds, riedizione dell’album del 1991 a nome Orion, “Achter De Schermen” che è una bella e pregiata raccolta di musiche scritte per il teatro) è completamente strumentale ed è un lirico, raffinato opus per solo piano. In "A Fleeting Light" il lirismo di Scherpenzeel è a briglia sciolta nella magnifica e lunga title track (38 minuti!), mentre “Irene” e “Lost Blue Of Chartres” sono due brani molto conosciuti del repertorio dei Kayak, una band della quale non ci stancheremo mai di tessere le lodi e che merita una continua, convinta riscoperta. Le versioni contenute in quest’ultima opera di Scherpenzeel sono assolutamente convincenti, e sono una delle diverse carte vincenti di “A Fleeting Light" tutto il costo del biglietto, come si suol dire. Ton, che ha iniziato la sua carriera solista con il non dimenticato Le Carnaval Des Animaux del 1978, ha la statura di un compositore e interprete a proprio agio con quella che è forse l’arte più complessa all’interno di un’espressione artistica, ovverossia sedurre il fruitore senza lasciargli il tempo di “contaminare” l’ascolto; in questo, “A Fleeting Light” disarma l’ascoltatore da subito, con la sua cristallina purezza. In tempi come quelli odierni, la proposta di un disco costruito su arrangiamenti per pianoforte atti a valorizzare la timbrica e la versatilità dello strumento in tutte le sue sfaccettature, è un gesto artistico che si confà ai grandi, ed in questo caso è una scelta assolutamente naturale che vale tutto il costo del biglietto, come si suol dire. A noi di “Bass, My Fever” questo disco è piaciuto moltissimo, a riprova della nostra attenzione non soltanto al mondo di basso elettrico e contrabbasso; ne consigliamo caldamente l’acquisto.
