And so we got to the 12th chapter of Evergrey saga, always at the top and full of an improved power. This “Escape of the Phoenix” starts with a telluric “A dandelion cipher”, almost a declaration of intents, supported by Johan Niemann’ s bass. We can say that it would be necessary not to place Evergrey just in the groove of progressive metal, because the swedish band spans more influences and moves at this point within a personal and consolidated taste. These are dark and evocative lyrics, which is to say songs of great breath like “In the absence of sun” opened by the piano in addition to being of great suggestion, a rhythm inclination that is balanced between classic heavy metal, almost djent inspirations not to mention some pages which are debtor to the best progressive rock. |
E siamo arrivati al dodicesimo capitolo della saga Evergrey, sempre sugli scudi e carichi di una rinnovata potenza. Questo “Escape Of The Phoenix” parte con la tellurica “A dandelion cipher”, quasi una dichiarazione d’intenti, sorretta dal basso di Johan Niemann. Possiamo dire che sarebbe necessario non collocare gli Evergrey solo nel solco del progressive metal, in quanto la band svedese abbraccia più influenze e si muove ormai in una traccia stilistica personale e consolidata. Testi cupi ed evocativi, brani di grande respiro come “In the absence of sun”, aperta dal pianoforte e di grande suggestione, una vocazione ritmica che si bilancia tra heavy metal classico, tendenze quasi djent e pagine appunto debitrici al migliore rock progressivo. |

As Evergrey and AFM have already well accostumed to, the sound is masterful, clear and the interplay between each instrument is flawless. The album was conceived during the pandemic and all the lyrics are really impressive. Among our favourite tracks we recommend – in addition to the already mentioned “In the absence of sun” – the melancholy “Stories”, the epic and elegant “The Beholder” (that boasts the presence of James Labrie), the violent and iconic “The darkness in you” included as a bonus track in the Artbook CD, the very successful “Where August mourn” with Niemann in the spotlight.

Come Evergrey e AFM ci hanno ben abituato, il suono è imperioso, pulito e l’interazione tra gli strumenti è nitida. L’album è stato concepito durante la pandemia e i testi sono molto convincenti. Tra i brani che preferiamo, la già menzionata “In the absence of sun”, la malinconica “Stories”, l’epica ed elegante “The beholder”, che vanta la presenza di James Labrie (Dream Theater vocalist), la violenta e iconica “The darkness in you” bonus track del CD dell'Artbook, la riuscitissima “Where August mourn” con Niemann in evidenza.
