(CARAVAN - CURVED AIR - WEDGWOOD BAND)
«I greatly respect a lot of jazz bassists, plus any others who do something new inventive and exciting. I’m not a pull and slap bass player, and sometimes I think too much solo bass can be too much solo bass, but of course I admire very much some of the “solo” bassists that have appeared in the last 20 years» |
For anyone who wants to approach the electric bass in a vision related to the perfect blend of progressive rock, classic rock and even jazz, there are bassists who cannot be overlooked, and who represent a piece of history (and what a history!) of our favourite instrument. One of these ones is Michael Wedgwood, an English bass player, born in 1950, who played in the ranks of legendary bands such as Caravan and Curved Air. "Cunning Stunts" and "Blind Dog At St. Dunstans" are two magnificent Caravan albums in which Mike's instrumental technique can be fully appreciated, even on fretless bass. "Phantasmagoria" and "Air Cut" are the two Curved Air works that you will have to rediscover to admire the refined interplay of Michael Wedgwood, whose solo career, we would like to underline that, is not to be passed over, equally divided between progressive rock, country rock and pop, with very well-calibrated choices in terms of both composition and performance. |

Mike granted us this interview before the pandemic, and we just want to thank him for being patient and maintaining regular and friendly contact with us over the past two years. This is a dense interview with valuable news, annotations, shot through with elegant and intelligent humour. We hope that he will soon be able to give us a new album, as he said in the interview, perhaps with prog tinges! |

Let’s start from your beginnings. Would you like to tell us how you started to approach electric bass? Why did you choose it? I was given a classical guitar for my 13th birthday, and it wasn’t very long before the poor thing was equipped with metal strings and a pickup!! I attempted to play rhythm guitar on it with my first band, “Heap” (no relation to Uriah) - where we played songs from the Stones and The Who, Cream and not least the Beatles. But after a while the bass player was needed behind the drums and we became a “power” trio. He had been playing on his own home-made bass and I used it, that becoming my first bass experience. At school I attempted to play double bass, but not long enough to play in tune! I still wanted to play 6-string, but when I got to boarding school there was a place in a band for a bassist, and I took it. So actually I didn’t choose the bass, it chose me. And I’m very happy that it did! A little later my direction was rather confused by the fact that I was asked to play tenor sax in a soul band “Just Us” while still at school - having never tried a brass instrument before. But somehow I managed to learn to play presentably before the original sax player left four weeks later! Since then I have mostly stuck to my bass and sometimes rhythm guitar. I still have the spanish guitar, and the years of abuse are still evident, although it have tried to restore it to its original condition. |
Partiamo dai tuoi inizi. |
What about your music influences, in general, and as regards bass in particular? I sat at home for hours in the mid-sixties and played bass with Paul McCartney, unbeknown to him. And likewise with songs we were playing in “HEAP” - Stones etc. I listened to a wide variety of music in the ’70’s - from Frank Zappa to Crosby Stills and Nash, Miles Davis to James Taylor, Paul Simon to Weather Report. As you can see the bass players I listened to came from lots of different backgrounds, and that’s still a strong part of my musical philosophy. I love to play lots of differing styles. In fact if you look at the bands I’ve been in and the songs I’ve written you might easily say that there’s some confusion in my musical direction! But I love it all. To answer the question more specifically, I greatly respect a lot of jazz bassists, plus any others who do something new inventive and exciting. I’m not a pull and slap bass player, and sometimes I think too much solo bass can be too much solo bass, but of course I admire very much some of the “solo” bassists that have appeared in the last 20 years. |
You have played together with legendary groups such as Caravan and Curved Air. What do you remember about those experiences? I am very lucky to have had the chance to play with Caravan and Curved Air. Both bands were - and still are - ground-breaking bands. Underrated I think. They still please crowds wherever they go, and their musical abilities have not suffered from member changes or through time. I remember both periods as being challenging and satisfying. I knew that there was something special about each of them, and I believe as a result I grew enormously while I was with each of them. I remember fondly the time on the road with them, and the whole organisation behind the shows, and the fun we had traveling. Recently I was with Curved Air in Japan to play the Air Cut album with them. Although it was a short tour and I was on stage for a relatively short time, I count it as one of the best experiences I’ve had. (This is the link to the video ndr) To spend time with such kind as well as talented people was a joy! Great music and travel are a marvelous combination. |
Ricordo entrambi i periodi come stimolanti e soddisfacenti. |
Your solo albums (in addition to the ones recorded with the Wedgwood Band) are really refined and oriented towards a high-quality rock tinged with country. Did anybody ask you to record a fully progressive work? I would actually love to produce a progressive album. My musical involvement after the ‘70’s has been with other styles of music, which perhaps come more naturally to me when I write. I don’t usually have any plan as far as the style is concerned, although the Wedgwood Band album “Thrive” was written and played in a somewhat 70’s trio rock style. And I must admit that my recent trip with Curved Air has made me miss playing progressive music! We’ll see what happens. |
Would you like to tell us how you chose to live in Denmark? I had not long moved back to England from 17 years in the US, and my friend Gordon Haskell asked me to join him on a tour of Denmark in late ’93. When we arrived there was no place arranged for me to stay. The booker had a friend Kirsten who had had musicians staying to earn extra money, and after much pressure from the agent she agreed to have me to stay. Kirsten and I have been together since, and happily married for 24 years now! I love living in Denmark and I’m very pleased Gordon asked me to join him all those years ago. “Places Like These”, which is your first solo album, was released by Voiceprint Records and it’s out of print at the moment. The second one, “The Secret Document”, is currently unfindable. Do you think that they could be reissued sooner or later? I’m not sure that those albums will be rereleased. It would be great if it looked like there’s a market for them. But as you probably know, it’s quite hard for aging rock musicians to sell music now, unless they have a lasting following. The albums would have to be promoted quite extensively. |
Il secondo, "The Secret Document", è attualmente introvabile. |
Why don’t you tell us about your collaboration with the great John Entwistle on “Mad Dog”? I had been working with Nicky James as bass player and arranger, and the drummer was Graham Deakin who I had played with in The Overlanders, Arthur’s Mother, Nicky James and shortly with Kiki Dee. He was in John Entwistle’s studio band, and played one session with the Who. Through Graham and the producer, John Alcock, also involved with Nicky James, I was asked to do the arranging and conducting. John E was not exactly a bundle of smiles and positivity, and the crate of Napoleon Brandy that turned up each day was not quite in keeping with the task of conducting and recording 45 classical musicians, but it was a very memorable few days! |
Getting back to electric bass, in the seventies rock and prog have cranked out a lot of really creative bassists. I think of Chris Squire, Pekka Pohjola, obviously you, Colin Hodgkinson… As regards electric bass, is there still a chance for a further expressive evolution in rock and jazz? What’s your opinion about that? I certainly hope so. There are always young talents cropping up in the jazz and fusion world, and it’s more a matter of when they manage to get people’s attention. Dane Alderson the bassist for Yellowjackets for example - I do hope he’ll get the attention he deserves. It probably sounds a little pompous, but I love it when people have intelligent musical tastes. |
What’s your relationship with fretless and double bass? I played fretless bass in Caravan sometimes - on the album “Cunning Stunts” for example, and I love the sound. Occasionally I have played one since then. Singing and playing bass has not been difficult for me, and I guess I am able to play fretless while singing, but since I don’t play the fretless that much any more, and now I’m more often the lead singer, I like to stick to fretted while I’m singing so I don’t have to concentrate on tuning both the instrument and the voice at the same time. I had a double bass for many years, and I did play it a couple of times on stage with The Overlanders, but never since. Finally a few years ago I gave myself 6 months to learn to play it reasonably well, but at the end of that time I hadn’t progressed enough in my eyes (ears), so I sold it. It was very pretty - with an antelope skin on the back. |
Would you like to talk about the start of the Wedgwood Band and its beginnings? I’m very lucky to be in Denmark where the standard of musicianship is very high. When I started the studio in 1999 the first band that recorded was one from the local school, and the drummer, Eddi Jarl, then 17 years old, was outstanding. Since then he has been the only permanent drummer in The Wedgwood Band. Aside from that he’s become a very sought-after musician here in Denmark, and is the drummer for one of the country’s most popular festival bands as well as playing with countless others in the studio and on stage. We started with a keyboard player who Eddi played with - Esben Henriksen - and my duo partner Lars Schroeder on guitar. Soon afterwards Lars decided to use the time on other things, and we’ve had Henrik Skriver as guitarist ever since. Lars and I have now played together as a duo for more than 24 years. The band did a short tour in and around Rome, and since then has played in Denmark. After a short time with another keyboard player Josef Baumgartner on keyboards during which we played at Skanderborg Festival, we became a trio - at the time we recorded “Thrive”. |

What about your past and current gear? In 1975 I got Pete Stevens of Wal basses to make me a custom Precision neck for my Jazz, because strangely the original neck had already started to twist! I still have it on the bass, but in the meantime around 1985 I had a fretless fretboard made in Fairbanks Alaska by Chris Kilgore. It has also had. When I moved to Denmark I needed money to start my studio and I sold the bass to Guy Whittaker, son of Roger. When in 2015 Guy asked for more of the history of the bass in order to sell it I sent the info, and then 10 minutes later offered to buy it back. I did. I now play that bass most of the time, after having a new fretted fretboard made, and occasionally an acoustic Maison bass and an Ibanez Sabre. I’ve had a TC Electronics amp sytem for many years. At one point with 4 x 10” and 1 x 15 EBS cabinets, and for the past several years with 2 x 10 and 2 x 12 TC Electronics cabinets. |
