Golden Core records confirms to be an incredible label capable to deepen the infinite archive of high-profile hard rock and heavy metal too many times buried under out of print or untraceable album titles. In this regard Golden Core gives us a real gem thanks to the reissue on cd format of german Mass’s first album, a group to whom our website feels very closed to, previously known under the name of Black Mass. Günther Victor Radny voice and bassist, Detlef Schreiber on guitar and Johannes Eder are massive and immediate, as regards this specific epitome of power trio, with an old fashioned sound exclusively to speed up the fascination of all collectors and hard rock era enthusiasts. The element which stands out and strikes at the heart in this album is the blues inspiration of Mass, which is really important and trump card of the whole album. |
La Golden Core si conferma una label incredibile nello scavare l’infinito archivio di hard rock e heavy metal di spessore nascosto troppo spesso in titoli fuori catalogo e di difficile reperibilità. In questo caso la Golden Core ci regala una vera gemma, con la ristampa in cd del primo album dei tedeschi Mass, ai quali il nostro sito è molto legato, precedentemente noti come Black Mass. Günther Victor Radny al basso e alla voce, Detlef Schreiber alla chitarra e Johannes Eder sono, in questa particolare incarnazione come power trio, efficaci e diretti, con un sound che risulta old fashioned, ma solo per accelerare l’innamoramento del collezionista e dell’amante più puro dell’hard rock d’epoca. Quel che risalta e colpisce al cuore in questo album è la matrice blues dei Mass, davvero importante e carta vincente dell’inter lavoro. |

It’s impossible not to be fascinated by some tracks like the bluesy “When I remember”, the straight r’n’r of “Reflections” and “Devil song”.
Not to mention the song “Game to play” whose structure remembers a masterpiece like “Your love is alright” for the almost funky line that runs through it; and moreover the expressive as well as orgasmic solo drum on “ABC”. All the five bonus tracks of the Black Mass period show a band who is intent on developing a signature style that appears congruent with that time, so they are not-insignificant finds full of decisively brilliant ideas like the dramatic “Hey world what is wrong”, with a persuasive bass which is impressive also on “Keep on moving”. Thus we must welcome the further philological surprise given by Golden Core and meanwhile confirm that Mass – we never get tired of saying that – are a group to rediscover and appraise again and to whom confer all the honors widely gained over the course of a long and coherent career.

Impossibile non lasciarsi trascinare da brani come la bluesy “When I remember”, lo straight r’n’r di “Reflections” e “Devil song”. Per non parlare del brano “Game to play” che nella struttura ricorda una meraviglia come “Your love is alright”, nella serpentina quasi funky che lo percorre nervosamente; e ancora, il drum solo espressivo e orgasmico di “ABC”.
Le cinque tracce bonus del periodo Black Mass mostrano una band intenta a sviluppare una cifra stilistica coerente con il periodo, e sono un reperto non trascurabile che in nuce contiene idee decisamente brillanti come la drammatica “Hey world what is wrong”, con un basso convincente, perentorio anche in “Keep on moving”. Dobbiamo festeggiare, dunque, l’ennesima sorpresa filologica in casa Golden Core, e al contempo ribadire che i Mass, non ci stancheremo mai di dirlo, sono una band da riscoprire, rivalutare e alla quale conferire gli onori ampiamente guadagnati in una lunga e coerente carriera.
