Today we deal with a really precious reissue released by Cherry Red that we dedicate to all classic rock and AOR enthusiasts: a triple CD including two solo albums of Lou Gramm that is to say the legendary Foreigner’s singer, each ones recorded in 1987 and 1989, respectively. The first one titled “Ready or not” is a perfect combination between a high-class refined rock and AOR/FM timeless hard rock, surely linked to the signature style of Foreigner, anyway with a plus in terms of great players like the guitarist Nils Lofgren as well as the bassist and songwriter Bruce Turgon. Every tracks of the album alternate elegant ballads and some tighter episodes like, for instance, the fantastic “She’s got to know”, with lots of wind instruments inserts. |
On “Long Hard Look” of 1989, the brilliant Lou’s voice can count on an incredible list of collaborators: Dann Huff (Giant), again Nils Lofgren, the guitarist Peter Maunu, Vivian Campbell (Dio, Def Leppard and two years after joining with the super group Shadow King precisely with Gramm, Turgon and Kevin Valentine) not to forget Pino Palladino on bass on the beautiful “Warmest Rising Sun”. This is a class work as well as with dreamy guitar parts (it would be impossible to choose between Huff and Campbell), surely with an american taste anyway doubtless universal. Among the songs which we feel to prefer there are the perfect “Broken dreams”, the captivating as well as soffused “I’ll come running”, the hard “Hangin’ on my hip” (a wonderful Bruce Turgon on bass) and the surprising cover of Small Faces’s “Tin Soldier”. |
